Cloud Atlas—A Book Review
I think I am not made out for long novels like Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. I begin to think of the futility of it all as I did in ‘A Hundred Years of Solitude.’
I suppose I should stick to crime novels of the Agatha Christie kind. Getting too old for these tongue twisting novels.
Of course I loved the first six stories but then the pidgin English of Zachry exhausted me. I just could not pick up the glass again. It was ‘enough no more it is not so sweet as before.’
I loved Timothy Cavendish. I loved Robert Frobisher. I loved Zachry and the Prescient Meronym.
The magician in David Mitchell; the Merlin of literature just sort of monopolized the conversation. It was like a brilliant school play that would not end.
I think if I get younger, I will read it again.
Like you, I got lost half way through and gave up though I thought that his dialogue was brilliant.

I thought it was a brilliant book, plot-wise, but I didn’t like any of the characters…except for the Papa Song waitress.

I keep forgetting how all of these movies come from books. It was hard enough trying to follow the movie. Although I watched it 3 times if you can believe it. My kids and I kept quoting parts from the movie. I actually convinced my kids to sit still and watch the movie. It was pretty decent until I found out about where the Asian women ended up and then I was not happy any further. Oh well it’s just a book….or movie… Soylent Green is made of people!

Half way through this… Just finished Zachry’s story. Really enjoying it – especially as I can’t see where it’s going.
